Evolving the Card and Board Games of the Past

With the advancement of technology came the evolution of games. As strange as it may seem to think of inorganic items in this manner, there is a definite advancement in the nature of games, and one can see the growth with minimal review. The most fascinating of all is the way games built for adults have transformed into high-quality kids games.

Kids Games

While everyone has seen the improvements on games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man, a lesser-known facelift was recently done to the very first video game ever created: Pong. By applying characters from Avatar the Last Airbender, incorporating an arena style setting, adding challenging environmental effects, and giving the player special attacks, the original game of pong seems almost unrecognizable in Four Nations Tournament. Yet, the basic principle is still there, to bounce the ball of a bumper (in this case a character), get it past the opponent, and land it in their goal.

Card games, which have been around for thousands of years in rudimentary forms, have become far more complex, requiring special rules, collections, and detailed strategies. Many companies developing these games create an online world where players can receive “rare” cards through special events, and can purchase normal cards based on winning imaginary currency, or they allow individuals to purchase packs of cards from a store and scan them into the online world. Each method allows players to build a unique deck of cards that suits their personal play styles.

Even traditional board games have made the transition to the electronic stage. The first few games, chess and checkers, have been remade a number of times, with each new version offering better computer intelligence and graphics. In addition, board games like Candy Land have been converted to party games where players move around the board and perform special tasks and mini-games based on the challenge of their particular square.

The addition of special event squares, and the inclusion of well-known characters, keeps the attention of young kids while offering a greater challenge for adults. Since video games are built on the balance of enjoyment and challenge, the increasing difficulties are proof that gamers are thinking and acting faster, and are far more strategic than older, non-gaming generations.

While many of these newer game types are found on console systems at a heavy price, there are an even larger number of them online. In fact, the next evolutionary stage to the video game seems to be the online market, and it is not hard to find free games online nowadays. As the technology continues to grow, developers will be looking at the most popular games of today to create fascinating worlds of tomorrow.
